Te whare wananga o Te Maro

The top of the whare is called Tahuhu (backbone).
The side panels are called Heke (ribs).

Bottom one is from matatua

Middle one- Ngati pukenga




4 painting tuna, crab, mako shark, tuatara are displayed in front of matai and represent the names of the 4 class in matai are:
Pāpaka 
Tuna 
Mako Mangō 
Tuatara



The marae always face northwards or near northwards this is because the ancestors get to  face to the sun.
